Understanding Your Foundation Repair Warranty

Understanding your foundation repair warrantyHave you ever been drawn into buying something or hiring a certain service provider based on the warranty the seller promised you? Chances

are that not all these purchases proved to be worth your while. If you have once or twice been duped into blindly falling for warranties, then you need not beat down on yourself. There are countless other home owners who have fallen for the same old marketing gimmick. If you hire a repair contractor who gives you a warranty, you need to take time in understanding your foundation repair warranty.

Since some salespeople use the warranty game to persuade you to buy their services, you need to at least read through the fine print before appending your signature on the dotted line. When hiring a contractor to do some structural repair work, seek to understand the warranty that such a contractor promises you. We have taken the liberty of defining some of the common terms just to get you in the know:

i. Lifetime Warranties– Be very careful when the contractor promises you a lifetime warranty for foundation repairs. Lifetime warranties vary depending on the State in which you reside. Some States have capped the lifetime warranty to 7 years when some have capped it at 11 years while in some other jurisdictions lifetime warranties cover the life of the structure. This variation in the duration covered by this type of warranty is premised in general law which was enacted in some jurisdictions capping the standard life for any service at seven years. So, check what the law in your State says about this.

ii. Limited Warranties– As you work towards understanding your foundation repair warranty, you might come across a warranty that is limited in its scope. A limited warranty only covers those things which can be directly affected by the repair work that has been done. Make sure that you read through the fine print to understand what the warranty covers and for how long. You also need to inquire if there are any fees that you will have to pay for the service provider to honor the warranty.

iii. Manufacturer’s warranty– Check and see if the products installed on your property come with a manufacturer’s warranty. It is best practice within the industry for product manufactures to have a simple and comprehensive product warranties which can be understood by any homeowner. Your contractor should present you with three copies for your perusal then you hand one copy back to him for his record before you send one copy directly to the product manufacturer and keep one copy for your records. The process is very simple and highly effective.
