Home’s Plumbing May Affect Its Foundation

If you’re a homeowner, then you probably have a lot on your plate. In addition, to work and caring for the kids, you have dozens of aspects of home maintenance to worry about—many of which are beneath the ground and out of sight. For example, your home’s plumbing could be negatively affecting your foundation without your knowledge. Here’s a quick look at how your home’s plumbing can affect your foundation:

Plumbing and Foundations

Though many houses are different, most foundations are enormous concrete slabs that act as intermediaries between the ground and the home. In most cases, the home’s plumbing goes straight through the foundation as it links the home’s water fixtures and drains to the local water supply and sewer systems. Most of the time, a home’s plumbing and sewage systems are installed first, and then the concrete of the foundation is poured around them.

Water Damage

As with many other aspects of your home, there may come a time when your plumbing becomes damaged due to old age or weather. If the parts of your plumbing that go through your foundation begin to crack, they’ll likely leak and cause serious damage. Since the water will have nowhere to go, the pressure could build up and cause your foundation to crack.

Shifting Foundation

Just as your plumbing can affect your foundation, so too can your foundation affect your plumbing. For instance, if your foundation shifts due to shrinking or swelling soil, your stationary pipes, and plumbing fixtures are likely to bend and begin leaking. The resulting water can erode your foundation.
